Thomas Kitchin. “Map of the Countries on the South Sea, from Panama to Guayquil.” From Dr. William Robertson’s The History of America. London: W. Strahan & T. Cadell, Sept. 29, 1777. 14 1/2 x 9 1/2. Engraving. A few spots. Else, very good condition.
A 1777 map of the northwest part of South America and the southern part of Central America. This is a typically detailed map by Thomas Kitchin, a prolific English mapmaker of the late eighteenth century whose maps were used for many geographies and magazines, including in this case Robertson’s History of America. Produced by Dr. William Robertson, a Scottish historian and Principal of the University of Edinburgh, this work contained text and maps on the Americas. This map shows from Panama to the northern edge of Peru, with excellent detail of rivers, roads, towns and cities.
