An original 1908 map of the world.  By the early 20th century, the Rand, McNally & Co. firm from Chicago had established itself as one of the world’s premier cartographic publishers.  Their maps were known for their copious yet clear detail and this map is no exception.  The map focuses particularly on the economic factors of transportation and communication.  A key in the lower left explains that the white lines show steam vessel routes, with the white arrows show currents.  In red are shown telegraph lines around the world.  These show how even at this time the world was becoming a connected place.
