Allegory of the French Republic

Alexandre Evariste Fragonard fils.  “République Française.”  From Collection complète des tableaux historiques de la Révolution Française.  Paris: Chez Auber, 1804.  Engraved by Jacques Louis Copia.  8 x 12 1/4.  Very good condition.

A striking allegory of the French Republic from a volume which is considered to be “one of the most significant artistic achievements of the revolutionary period.”  The work consisted of 145 engravings showing some of the most dramatic scenes of the French Revolution from a series of French artists, some of whom witnessed the scenes depicted. In this case, Fragonard made a heroic image of the just recently established republic.
