Ambroise Verschaffelt, ed. “Camellia Arethusa.” From Nouvelle Iconographie des Camellias Contenant les Figures et La Description des plus Rares, des plus Nouvelles et des plus Belles Variétés de ce Genre. Ghent: Ambroise Verschaffelt, 1851. Quarto. Lithographs by G. Severeyns and L. Stroobant. Original hand color. Sitwell: Great Flower Books, p. 161.
These beautiful images were produced for a comprehensive series of 624 plates on varieties of camellias, begun in 1848 by Alexandre Verschaffelt, and continued by Ambroise Verschaffelt after March 1850 through to its completion in 1860. Artists who created the images for the Verschaffelts were B. Leon, A. Lagarde, G. Severeyns, L. Stroobant and P. Stroobant. These handsome, hand colored lithographs follow in the tradition of Jung’s illustrations for Lorenzo Berlèse’s Iconographie du Genre Camellia . . . published in Paris from 1839-43.
