Beauvarlet’s “La Double Surprise”

After Gerard Dou.  “La Double Surprise.”  Paris: J.F. Beauvarlet, 1750-1797.  Engraving by Jacques Firmin Beauvarlet.  17 x 13 1/2.  Narrow margins as issued.  Very good condition.

A beautifully rendered print by noted French engraver Jacques Firmin Beauvarlet (1731-1797).  Originally from Abbeville, Beauvarlet moved to Paris in 1750, becoming the graveur du roi in 1762.  A young maid is caught by her employer in the cellar, where she is tasting some of the wine from a barrel, while at the same time the employer’s wife is coming in catching the two of them and raising a scolding finer.  This humorous scene includes many interesting details, such as a mouse trap, all finely engraved by Beauvarlet.
