“Benjamin Franklin.” From John Andrews’ History of the War with America, France, Spain and Holland; commencing in 1775 and ending in 1783. London: John Fielding, September 23, 1785. Engraving by Goldar. 5 7/8 x 3 5/8. Slight blemish just above head. Otherwise, very good condition.
An excellent, contemporary portrait of Benjamin Franklin. Interestingly, this print was issued in a British history of the American Revolution, published shortly after the Treaty of Paris which ended the war. Franklin is shown as a mature, but not old man, as he indeed was at the time. His reputation in England and abroad made his inclusion in this work appropriate. Contemporary portraits of Franklin are quite rare and desirable, and this is not exception.
