Rigobert Bonne. “L’Empire De La Chine d’Apres l’Atlas Chinois, avec les Isles du Japon.” From Atlas Moderne. Paris: J. Lattré, 1762. 12 1/4 x 17 1/2. Engraving. Original outline color. Very good condition.
A handsome and clearly engraved antique map of China of the late 18th century. This is from Jean Lattré’s Atlas Moderne which contained many maps by Rigobert Bonne, one of the best French cartographers working at the day. Though not signed, the map was possibly engraved by Lattré, whose engraving work won him the title of “Graveur Ordinaire” first to the Dauphn, and later to the King of France. The map is said to be based on Chinese maps and indeed it shows an impressive number of towns and cities, rivers, and political divisions. The map also includes Korea and Japan. A delightful title cartouche, with smoking China-man, appears in the lower right corner.
