David H. Burr was one of the most important American cartographers of the first half of the nineteenth century. He studied with Simeon DeWit and later went on to become the geographer for the U.S. Post Office and then for the House of Representatives. He issued his New Universal Atlas with maps of all the American states, as well as regions and countries around the world.
