J.H. Colton was one of the leading American publishers in the middle of the nineteenth century.  Important in the development of the lithographic map making, his firm was influential in moving the center of American mapmaking from Philadelphia to New York City.  His maps are known for their careful detail and attractive hand color.  This detailed plan of Washington on the eve of the Civil War includes three vignettes.
