“Colton’s Canada West or Upper Canada.” New York; Johnson & Browning, 1859. 12 3/4 x 15 1/2. Lithograph. Original hand color. Minor chipping in corners. Else, very good condition.
An original antique map of Canada West, also called ‘Upper Canada,’ published by Johnson & Browning in 1859, the year they took over Colton’s Atlas. In the mid-nineteenth century, the center of map publishing in America moved from Philadelphia to New York and the Colton publishing firm played a large role in this shift, then Johnson basically took over and dominated American map publishing in the following years. This map of essentially today’s Ontario is a nice example of the firm’s output.
