D’Anville. “Egypt.” From A New and Elegant General Atlas by Aaron Arrowsmith and Samuel Lewis. Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Petersburg and Norfolk: Conrad & Co., 1804. 9 1/2 x 7 7/8. Engraving by J.H. Seymour. Very good condition.
An excellent antique map of Egypt, based on the mapping of the great French cartographer, D’Anille. It is from an early Anglo-American atlas. The maps were primarily the works of Aaron Arrowsmith, one of the foremost cartographers of his era, and Samuel Lewis, one of the leaders in the nascent American cartographic field, but other authorities were used as in this case. The detail is impressive.
