[1]-518 pp. Folding, engraved and hand colored frontispiece map, numerous woodcuts showing buildings and plans in the text. Full leather. Rehinged. Interior fine. Not in Sabin, but similar title appeared in Baltimore in 1832 and New York 1842. Ref.: see Sabin, 18694 and 18692 respectively.

With “Mitchell’s Map of the United States showing the Principle Traveling Turnpike and Common Roads…also the Courses of the Canals & Railroads.”  With some discoloration at right, but overall, very good.

A fine copy of one of many geographical treatises published in the United States in the early nineteenth century. The map is spectacular being “[S. Augustus] Mitchell’s Map of the United States showing the Principle Traveling Turnpike and Common Roads…also the Courses of the Canals & Railroads.” Philadelphia, copyright 1835, and “sold by Mitchell and Hinman 1838.” Engraving on banknote paper, full hand color. 19 x 23. Contains a table of distances and eight insets featuring the environs of: Niagara Falls, Baltimore-Washington, Charleston, Hartford-New Haven, Albany, Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. A fine American gazetteer.
