Guillaume Delisle. “Carte des Cotes de Malabar et de Coromandel.” Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier, ca. 1730. Engraving. 17 x 22. Original hand color. Very good condition.
A highly detailed map by the ‘father of scientific cartography’ showing from the southern part of the Indian peninsula. Guillaume Delisle was at the forefront of the eighteenth century move towards scientific cartography, and his map reflects this nicely. The map contains copious details of mountains, rivers, lakes, towns, roads, and political divisions. It is presented in a scientific manner, with neatness and precision. Besides this wealth of detail, the best available in Europe at the time, this map is also very attractive, with precise engraving, lovely outline hand color, a strong impression, and a decorative title cartouche.
