Bernard Picart le Romain. Deucalion & Pyrrha repeople the World.” From The Temple of the Muses; or the Principal Histories of Fabulous Antiquity. Amsterdam: Zachariah Chatelain, 1733. 13 3/4 x 9 7/8. Engraving. Very good condition.
From a series of sophisticated and lively prints illustrating some of the most dramatic of the Greek and Roman myths. Much in the manner of late Baroque art, each tale is presented as an elaborate combination of writhing muscular figures, expressive faces, and wondrous landscapes. The artist controls his medium well and is thus able to achieve the appropriate effects of energy, conflict and turmoil. Each finely engraved image is surrounded by a decorative frieze-like border with symbols and ornaments that embellish the myth. There is also an accompanying text for each print, explaining the myth and putting it in an historical context. Thus a series of informative as well as powerful visual rendering of the great ancient myths.
