Earliest image of the Texas Rangers, 1842

“Texas Mounted Militia.”  With full issue of The Illustrated London News.  London: June 18, 1842.  Image 4 3/4 x 6 1/4.  Wood engraving.  Very good condition.

An original antique print, the first known image of what became the Texas Rangers.  Originally a militia put together by Stephen Austin in 1823, they were called variously the Texas Mounted Militia, Texas State Troops, Frontier Regiment, State Rangers, and most famously, Texas Rangers.  This issue of the Illustrated London News contains this wood engraving as well as a short article on the troops and the situation in Texas, which was then an Independent Republic.
