Paul Jerrard. “The Group of Splendour.” From Gems for the Drawing Room. London: P. Jerrard, 1852. 13 1/2 x 10 1/4. Lithograph. Original hand color. Very good condition.
A striking image of a group of flowers from an unusual series prints produced by London bookseller, illustrator, lithographer and colorist Paul Jerrard. Jerrard is particularly known for his elaborate volumes illustrated with lovely images such as this. An advertisement for his Gems volumes states that they were intended “to afford delight to all who can appreciate the beautiful in Nature,” and that they were “most appropriate for Marriage, Birthday or Annual Presents.” Each plate presents a group of flowers bordered by gold-printed text and decorations.
