“General Howe.” From John Andrews’ History of the War with America, France, Spain and Holland; commencing in 1775 and ending in 1783. London: John Fielding, May 13, 1786. Engraving by Goldar. 5 3/4 x 3 1/2. Very good condition.
An excellent, contemporary portrait of the General William Howe. Howe was a seminal figure in the American War of Independence and so this excellent life-portrait was included in John Andrews’ History of the War. Howe was the Commander-in-Chief of British forces from 1775 until his resignation in early 1778. Such contemporary portraits of figures from the American Revolution are quite rare and desirable, and this is not exception.
