“Gray’s Atlas Map of Chicago.” Philadelphia: O.W. Gray, 1873. 14 3/4 x 12. Lithograph. Original hand color. Light stain in right margin. Else, very good condition.
A nicely detailed map of Chicago by the Philadelphia firm of O.W. Gray. The firm began its publishing around mid-century and published regional and U.S. atlases up to the 1880s, first as O.W. Gray and then O.W. Gray & Son. This map is typical of their work, presenting the latest information available with precise detail and with attractive hand color. This map shows the city just two years after the Great Fire of 1871, and it shows shows the city was recovering with great vigor.
