M. Merian. [Siege of Heidelberg.] From Johann Ludwig Goffried’s Historische Chronica. Frankfurt, 1745. Engraving. 9 5/8 x 15 1/4. Very good condition.
A lovely view of Heidelberg, showing the siege of the city by the Imperial army during the Thirty Year War. The city is seen across the Neckar River, completely surrounded by the Spanish troops under the County of Tilly and Don Gonzalo Córdoba. The English garrison, led by Sir Gerard Herbert, held out for eleven weeks, but the city finally fell in September 1622.
