James Queen. “Indian Mode of Travelling.” From Pierre Jean De Smet’s Letters and Sketches with a Narrative of a Year’s Residence among the Indian Tribes of the Rocky Mountains. Philadelphia: M. Fithian, 1843. 3 1/4 x 5 3/4. Lithograph by P.S. Duval. Small spot of wear at top edge of image. Else, very good condition.
A charming lithograph showing a group of Native Americans traveling, including using travoises. The print was drawn by James Queen and appeared in Pierre Jean De Smet’s Letters and Sketches with a Narrative of a Year’s Residence among the Indian Tribes of the Rocky Mountains and is based on his first hand description. Smet was a Belgian Catholic missionary who traveled to the Rocky Mountains in 1841 and 1842, his account being reliable and first-hand.
