A portrait of Jacques Necker (1732-1804).  He served King Louis XVI as Director General of Finance.  He tried to reform French institutions and then, after the start of the French Revolution, he tried to work with the Estates General, though that failed.  He retired and moved to Switzerland, surviving the terror of the Revolution.
