James Sowerby “Plate 122” From James Sowerby’s British Mineralogy: or Coloured Figures intended to elucidate the Mineralogy of Great Britain. London: Printed by R. Taylor and published by J. Sowerby 1804-1817. Engravings.
The lovely illustrations were the work, drawing and engraving, of James Sowerby, the progenitor of an impressive family of botanical, mineral and conchological illustrators. DuringSowerby’s lifetime, English mines were extracting thousands of tonnes of high quality ore. Sowerby sought out some of the unusually good mineral specimens and described in British Mineralogy, the best compendium of British minerology ever created. Fine examples of his work.
