A.R. Waud. “Inauguration of the Race-Course of the Jockey Club, Jerome Park–Start for the Four-Mile Heat.” From Harper’s Weekly. New York, October 13, 1866. 14 1/2 x 20 1/2. Wood engraving. Very good condition.
Harper’s Weekly was a New York based newspaper in the last half of the 19th and early 20th century. In weekly issues, Harper’s presented a mixture of news stories, gossip, poetry, and most notably, wood-engraved illustrations. These pictures remain one of the best sources for lively, informative images of 19th-century America. These illustrations are one of the few sources we have today about early team and individual sports, including horse racing. This print shows the inauguration of horse racing a Jerome Park.
