A striking and detailed map of the world by the Johnson map publishing firm.  A.J. Johnson, who published out of New York City, built a very successful business producing popular atlases, geographies and so on.  His maps were some of the best commercial maps of the nineteenth century.  This map shows the political situation around the world in 1864, as well as the extent of geographic knowledge in still unexplored regions, such as Africa and Antartica.  Countries and regions are indicated in contrasting pastel shades and major topography is nicely depicted.
