“Johnson’s Iowa and Nebraska.” New York: Johnson & Ward, 1862. 17 x 22 3/4. Lithograph. Original hand color. Some light discoloration in marings. Overall, very good condition.
An early map of Iowa and Nebraska from 1862 by New York mapmakers Johnson and Ward. Johnson and Ward were influential mapmakers and publishers during the mid to late 19th century and were a significant part of the New York publishing scene. This map is indicative of their style of work, with bright colors, accurate detail and decorative borders. In this map, Iowa and Nebraska are shown at an early point in their history. Neither was particularly populous, but the beginnings can be seen on this map, as well as the changes seen on the edition Johnson published two years later, as seen below.
