John Cary. “A New Map of South America, from the Latest Authorities by John Cary, Engraver.” London: John Cary, 1807. 35 3/4 x 20 1/2. Engraving. Original hand color. Some creasing at top. Else, very good condition.
A very large, antique map of South America, printed on two sheets and joined. Produced by John Cary, one of the leading British mapmakers of the early 19th century. This map has most impressive detail of the entire continent, neatly and clearly engraved by Cary. Of note is the appearance of “Lake Parima,” which is a remnant of the cartographic myth of El Dorado. A spectacular and fascinating map of the continent.
