Louis Orr (1879-1961) was born in Hartford, but spent many years working and studying in Europe. He studied at the Académie Julian in Paris and joined the French Army as an artist during World War I.  This resulted in prints of Reims Cathedral which established his reputation and earning him membership in the French Legion of Honor.

He continued to live in France, but visited the United States regularly, producing a number of portfolios of American scenes, including the 1928 set of fourteen etchings of Ports of America.
