Orbis Antiqui Tabulae geographicae Secundum Cl. Ptolemaeum. Amsterdam, ca. 1720. Engraving by Jan Van Vianen. 14 1/4 x 9 1/4. Some toning and light spotting to paper, but overall very good condition.
A wonderful allegorical title page from an early 18th century edition of Mercator’s Ptolemaic atlas. The focus of the symbolic figures surrounding the globe, which they are studying, representing art, music, mathematics and history. The god of the seas and nymphs of the rivers sit at the bottom and above all flies the goddess of fame who points out portrait medallions of famous geographers from the past.
