“Michigan and Wisconsin.” From Mitchell’s New Reference Atlas. Philadelphia: E.H. Butler & Co., 1869. 8 x 10 3/4. Lithograph. Original hand color. Light waterstain in lower left. Else, very good condition.
This is an example of reference maps from an atlas intended “for the use of Colleges, Libraries, Families, and Counting Houses.” The atlas was published by E.H. Butler of Philadelphia, the successor firm to Cowperthwait, Desilver & Butler, and the maps are probably the work of the S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr. cartographic firm. As such, they are clear and up-to-date, and presented with clarity so as to be able to be used as reference works.
