In the mid-nineteenth century, there was a great demand by the general public for good geographies showing all parts of the world. News from around the globe reached the American public and they wanted access to geographic information about all part of the world. This map is from one of the better geographies of the period, by Roswell C. Smith. It shows the three states with impressive detail of every county and county seat, but the focus is the railroads criss-crossing the region.
