In later issues of his 1880 atlas, Mitchell inserted an updated map of the Dakota Territories. Mitchell was always concerned with keeping his maps up-to-date, and this map is no exception. With the events in Dakota of 1874-76, the development in the western part of the territory expanded rapidly, as is evidenced on this map with its copious information in the southwest corner, including the “Black Hills Base Line” and “Guide Meridian” of the U.S. survey. Also, Mitchell no longer shows the Indian reservations and he adds and updates the country development in the territory. An updated version of the Mitchell map of the Dakotas from two years before (cf. above). This map adds the counties of Hardin and Martin.
