W.H. Gamble. “County Map of the States of Iowa and Missouri.” From Mitchell’s New General Atlas. 14 x 11 1/2. Lithograph. Original hand color. Very good condition.
An early, original antique map of these two mid-western states by one of the leading American cartographers of the period, S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr. Mitchell had taken over his father’s map publishing business in Philadelphia and continued to issue fine atlases in the second half of the nineteenth century. The impressive development in Iowa and Missouri is clearly shown on the map, with counties, towns, rivers and especially railroads clearly presented. The handsome hand color and floral border combine to make this as attractive as it is historically interesting.
