“A New Map of Maine.” Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell. 13 7/8 x 11 1/2. Lithographic transfer from engraved plate. Full original hand color. Very good condition.
An original antique map of Maine issued by S. Augustus Mitchell of Philadelphia. In 1846, S. Augustus Mitchell purchased the rights to the important Universal Atlas by H.S. Tanner. Mitchell had lithographic transfers made of the engraved maps and issued his version of Tanner’s Universal Atlas, with maps that were essentially unchanged, other than process and a new border. Mitchell then immediately started to make some changes to the maps, mostly changing the copyright and publisher information, and he began his own series of editions of the Universal Atlas. This is from the 1849 edition of that atlas, and this map, like those of the earlier editions, is excellent, focusing on the transportation network, including roads, railroads and canals. All details are clearly presented, and these include towns, rivers, mountains, political boundaries and the transportation information.
