Description

For most of the middle part of the nineteenth century, the firm founded by S. Augustus Mitchell dominated American cartography in output and influence.  This fine map of Manhattan and Brooklyn is from one of his son’s atlases.  The map depicts and names streets, rail lines, and major buildings.  Good detail is given of Central Park and the islands around the city.  Each area is colored in a contrasting pastel shade and an inset of the northern end of New York is included in the bottom right.  A fine decorative border surrounds the map, and the whole effect makes for an attractive mid-nineteenth century map, as well as one of the most detailed maps of New York City of the later nineteenth century.
