“County Map of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware.” From New General Atlas. Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr., 1863. 10 5/8 x 13 1/4. Lithograph. Original hand color. Very good condition.
An original antique map showing the mid-Atlantic states during the Civil War. The Mitchell publishing firm from Philadelphia was one of the leading American mapmakers from the middle of the nineteenth century and this detailed and attractive map is a good example of why they were so successful. The map contains an impressive amount of information on roads, towns, topography, all presented clearly and with contrasting colors used to delineate the counties. An inset in the lower left shows the city of Philadelphia, and one in the lower right Baltimore.
