“County Map of Ohio and Indiana.” From Mitchell’s New General Atlas. Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr., 1863. 10 1/2 x 13 1/4. Lithograph. Original hand color. Very good condition.
An original antique map of these two mid-western states by one of the leading American cartographers of the second half of the nineteenth century, S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr. The 1860s was a period of considerable growth in the area and this is Mitchell’s first map of the two states, but showing an amazing amount of detail. The counties are indicated with contrasting colors and major towns and cities named. Of particular interest is the extensive network of railroads criss-crossing the area, also shown extending into the surrounding states. This historically interesting information is presented with bright hand color and Mitchell’s famous floral border, making this an excellent map.
