Night & Day scenes of Crimean War. Ca. 1855. 9 x 12. Lithograph. Original hand color. Very good condition.
An interesting double-sided, novelty print from the mid-nineteenth century. The sheet has a hand-colored, lithographed image on both sides, one showing a day-time and one a night-time scene of the same place (though flipped). By turning over the sheet of paper the viewer obtains a novel and thought-provoking look at the contrasting images. These prints were done as a series, which likely would have been kept in a portfolio, and now could be framed with glass on both sides. The scene here shows British and French troops in the Crimean, with a scene of a bay on the Baltic Sea.
