A map showing the world’s hydrographical features and ocean currents. This map shows the ocean’s surface temperature, as well as features like the seaweed beds of the Sargasso Sea. This map was drawn by Augustus Petermann, one of the foremost geographers and cartographers of his time. Petermann revolutionized cartography by being the first to popularize the idea of thematic maps like this one. His influence in maping impermanent, non-geographic features like temperature, rainfall, demographics, and disease lead to the maps we know today.
