J. Wells, “W. Virginia, Virginia, N. Carolina and S. Carolina.” Chicago: Rand, McNally & Co, 1874. 10 7/8 x 8 3/8. Lithographic transfer from engraved plate. Engraved by Geo. E. Sherman. Some spotting. Fair condition.
A late nineteenth century map from the early days of the Rand, McNally & Co. firm out of Chicago, a company that would shift the center of cartographic publishing from the east coast to the mid-west. Typical of the work from the firm, this map has very good detail, precisely and neatly exhibited. On this map, the mountains, rivers, lakes and other details of North America are illustrated. Aesthetically and cartographically, a very interesting foreshadowing of the maps of the twentieth century.
