John Reid. “A General Map of South America From the Best Surveys, 1796.” From American Atlas. New York: J. Reid, 1796. 14 x 17 1/4. Engraving by B. Tanner. Light inked surface. Very good condition.
An original antique map of South America, from John Reid’s landmark American Atlas, which was published to accompany William Winterbotham’s An historical, geographical, commercial, and philosophical view of the United States of America. The maps from Reid’s atlas exhibit the best information available at the time. Much of this is accurate, though it does include a late example of Lake Parima in Guiana, a non-existent lake which is a remnant of the legend of El Dorado.
