Thomas Nast. “A Dream; Before and after Thanksgiving Dinner.” From Harper’s Weekly. New York, December 7, 1878. Wood engraving. 14 x 9 1/2. Small spot in bottom left margin. Else, very good condition.
Harper’s Weekly was a New York based newspaper in the last half of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. In weekly issues, Harper’s presented a mixture of news stories, gossip, poetry, and most notably, wood-engraved illustrations. Some of the best American artists of the nineteenth century produced images for Harper’s, including Thomas Nast. Nast is particularly famous for his Civil War scenes, his images of Santa Claus, and his political cartoons, but he also produced charming genre prints like this. The print shows a child’s dreams before Thanksgiving and then after he has eaten far too much on the holiday itself!
