The Cyclops at their forge

Luca Giordana.  “The Cyclops at Their Forge.”  London: John Boydell, Jan. 1 1788.  18 3/4 x 13 3/4.  Mezzotint by John Murphy.  Very good condition.

A superb mezzotint based on Luca Giordano’s painting of cyclops working around a forge.  In 1781, John Boydell, the leading British publisher of the day, commissioned a series of mezzotints based on paintings from Wlpole’s collection at Houghton, a collection which would be purchased by the Empress of Russia.  The result was a group of superb prints by the best mezzotint artists of the day, of which this is a fine example.
