“California, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and Washington.” From Mitchell’s New Reference Atlas. Philadelphia: E.H. Butler & Co., 1869. 10 3/4 x 8. Lithograph. Original hand color. Very good condition.
This is an example of reference maps from an atlas intended “for the use of Colleges, Libraries, Families, and Counting Houses.” The atlas was published by E.H. Butler of Philadelphia, the successor firm to Cowperthwait, Desilver & Butler, and the maps are probably the work of the S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr. cartographic firm. As such, they are clear and up-to-date, and presented with clarity so as to be able to be used as reference works. This map is impressive for the detail it includes of the far west shortly after the Civil War, a period of considerable growth in the area.
